Colt Starting Program

After receiving the horse, it will get the first two days off with no work so I have a chance to make friends with the horse, see how the horse moves and understand their personalities. I do this before we start training, this way the horse will trust me more then just the one that makes them work.
Step #1: The first thing that we are to work on is ground work, establishing respect and control on the ground first. We will use this step as a foundation for ever thing we will teach the horse from here on out, spending time on backing, round penning, lunging, sensitizing, desensitizing, and learning to flex from the ground.
Step #2: In this step we will prep the horse for riding. In the horses first couple of rides we will be just bare back. the reason for this, it helps the horse fell connected, having body to body contact. Some times a horse can fell trapped with the saddle, not knowing what to do. After the horse is comfortable we then introduce the saddle.
Step # 3: This is were we hope for a lot of wet saddle pads, focusing our work on the little things that really make a difference, flexing, backing, giving, and softening. Which in turn makes the stopping, turning, reining, and gait transitions all that much easer
Step #4: Step number 4 is the part we've been waiting for. This is when all the little things get to come together and we take it to the trail or ring.
These are just the first four steps in a life time of learning for your horse. and go into my personal goal. That's just a quick run down of my training program. My personal goal in this business is to turn out quality horses. It's not about the numbers or the amount of money. It's about preserving our heritage and the old style of life, back when things were much more simple. It is a privilege for me to do my job; as Chris LeDoux said, no machine can break a bay or bring in a lone stray. So I guess I will remain, thank God some things never change.
Thanks and remember, keep a deep seat in the saddle, and the far away look in your eye.
